Valentine's Day at Home

It goes without saying life has become different as of late. However, that doesn’t mean Valentine’s Day won’t be special. We just have to get creative about it. There are safe and socially distant activities you can participate in this Sunday to show your love to those who matter most to you.

When people think of Valentine’s they often think of fancy dates at four-star restaurants or making memories with someone special. While these kinds of dates may feel like a thing of the past, there are now virtual dates. Zoom and Discord have become popular sites during the pandemic and they might just be your outlet to a successful date. Playing video games such as Minecraft with someone special could be what you need to make Valentine's Day great. Maybe video games aren't your thing? That’s no problem at all, the possibilities are endless. You can tell someone you will DoorDash them dinner but tell them that the meal is a surprise. If surprises aren't your thing but you still like the idea of having a special dinner you can have a Zoom cook date. First, call your partner or friend and you both will pick an equal amount of store-bought cooking ingredients. Then, you will both buy them and call over zoom. You both will have to come up with a dish from those ingredients only and see who has the better dish.

Not a good cook? Yeah me either, luckily there are more ideas ahead. Love letters are a traditional yet perfect way to show your appreciation to someone. Regardless, if that’s a letter to your partner or a letter of appreciation to your closest friends, it will certainly make someone’s day. A new couple, a group of friends, or anyone at all can enjoy this next activity. The 36 Questions of love, invented by psychologist Arthur Aron, are questions that can help anyone get to know each other better. If you are a movie buff you love the chrome extension “Netflix Party”. This will allow you to watch Netflix with anyone from anywhere.

Movies have always been a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. From rom-coms to musicals here are the movies you should watch this weekend. La La Land (2016) is a beautiful movie musical to watch with someone special or your family. If you love La La Land you will love West Side Story (1961) this movie musical is inspired by Shakespeare's timeless tale Romeo and Juliet but in a 1960s setting. Happy Death Day (2017), while not technically a Valentine’s movie, is a movie that has come out on every Valentine’s day and is a fun watch for whoever is present. Not a musical person and want to watch a movie that isn’t so predictable, then Palm Springs (2020) is perfect for you. This Hulu original movie is a genre subverting comedy with just the right amount of romance.

While the traditional silver screen movie experience has been minimized by our current situation, the drive-in theater has spiked in popularity. Hiking is one of my favorite things to do while staying socially distanced. It’s active, it’s simple, and it’s a great way to make lasting memories. If exercising isn’t your thing, taking walks or visiting the park can be a nice way to relax with a friend or two. It’s important that we do these things safely, be considerate of others and follow the restrictions that keep everyone safe.

This Valentine’s Day, show how much you care for others by keeping your distance. Make choices that put others first, that’s what Valentine’s Day has always been about. Staying home and away from your friends hasn’t been easy for anyone, but with a little creativity we can make it work. Stay safe, and have a happy Valentine's Day! !
