Athletics Update for the week of August 18-24
Lady Eagles take the Win!
On August 22nd, 2019 Excelsior’s varsity volleyball team took the win against Hesperia Christian’s Patriots after a relatively short game of 48 minutes. The Eagles won three sets in a row, this victory so early in the season is an incredible omen for games to come.
In the first set we Eagles had the home advantage. We were in the lead for the first half, until the patriots stepped up their game giving us a challenge. #13 Mykala scored a lot of points for us she made some sharp attacks with some powerful spikes. Toward the end we begin to pick up speed again and take the lead, and the win! Go Eagles!
It seemed that for the first half of the second set the patriots were feeling particularly generous as they were practically giving us free points. However, they soon turned the tables and took the lead. Luckily #11 Madison really showed some skill. she had great serves, and was going for attacks, and getting some great hits. This helped us to pull back through and take the win!
The patriots have spent the majority of the third set in the lead. All of us in the audience were on the edge of our seats. If the Eagles could pull through for this last set, then we would win 3-0. They had some sharp attacks, but #10 Kaylie kept us on our toes by saving a point we all thought was lost by doing some deep digs. The eagles started to gain points again and we once again took the lead. So close to victory! And then we did it! The Eagles won 3-0. Quite an impressive feat.
Eagles Persevere
On August 24th the Eagles lost against Webb, a private school in Claremont. The game was long, just short of three hours. Both teams were exhausted by the end. Everyone in the crowd was deeply enthralled we cheered loudly at every touchdown we made, and deeply felt every penalty or loss.
Kickoff was at precisely 4:08. It was clear that we and Webb were evenly matched. We started as offense and started to push back toward the uprights, then we went to defense, and they started to push toward the uprights. The quarter ended, with a score of 0-0.
The second quarter was truly amazing. We got our first touchdown! Scored by #3 Jacob Aldridge, we also got the extra point kick! Earning us a total of 7 points! Webb however was quick to retaliate. Webb had the ball and was quickly running for a touchdown he had gotten a good 40 yards out with only 20 yards to go, and then #21 Jeremiah Burgess came down and crushed Webb’s dreams with an amazing tackle. Shortly after Webb struck back and got two touchdowns. The quarter ended 7-13 Excelsior to Webb.
After halftime, both teams have started to lose speed. We get back out on the field and the Eagles had on their game face, but so did Webb, and they had plans. They scored another touchdown right before the quarter ended. Leaving the score 7-19 Excelsior to Webb.
In the final quarter. Both teams were on their last legs. We were tired and this game has been strenuous, we were preparing to go back out there and do the best that we possibly can. They did their plays and they could not get through our defense we did our plays and got nowhere, the game began to draw to a close and everyone was on their last nerves, both teams seemed to be tackling without purpose at this point, perhaps for intimidation. Eagles lose 7-19.
